Women grain vendors bring nutritious stews home
 Farm women in Petaka, Mali, sell small amounts of pearl millet, drawn from their family granaries, alongside handmade items at the weekly fair. Pearl millet, a drought-resistant crop, dominates arable land along the fringes of the Sahara desert. With their earnings, these women will purchase the ingredients for the stews that accompany the stiff porridge (tô) their families consume daily. The more they earn, the more nutritious are their stews. After poor harvests in this harsh environment, these women vendors can be a trusted source of quality seed for the local varieties they know. |
